Russian (русский) is a Slavic language spoken primarily in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Russian is the official language of Russia, although it shares the official status at regional level with other languages in the numerous ethnic autonomies within Russia, such as Chuvashia, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and Yakutia. Russian is a Slavic language Indo-European family. Russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers and the 5th by total number of speakers. It is also the largest native language in Europe, with 144 million native speakers in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Russian is written using a modified version of the Cyrillic (кириллица) alphabet. The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. The spoken language has been influenced by the literary one, but continues to preserve characteristic forms. The dialects show various non-standard grammatical features.
