Oriya is the official language in the Indian states of Odisha and in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. It is an Indian language, belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. Oriya has 28 consonant phonemes and 6 vowel phonemes. Unlike Hindi, Oriya retains most of the cases of Sanskrit. Oriya is the predominant language of Odisha, where Oriya speakers comprise around 83.33% of the population according to census surveys.
